deRFmega

With the combination of very low current consumption, unbeatable small design and custom extension options the new AVR modules are universally applicable. With a receive listen current as low as 8mA the modules are especially suited for battery driven end devices; but at once they provide enough resources to be applied as router or coordinator. With the new line of ATmega256RFR2 powered modules the module that is best suited for the application can be selected. All deRFmega modules operate in the 2.4 GHz frequency range and are only available as SMT device with LGA pads (0.80 mm pitch).

The ATmega128RFA1 powered modules deRFmega128 with 128kB flash and 8kB RAM are pin and functional compatible to the deRFmega256 modules powered by the new ATmega256RFR2 from Atmel. The deRFmega128 modules with less than 1 µA sleep current are best suited for sleeping end devices. The deRFmega256 modules with 256kB flash and 32kB RAM and an best in class receive current of 8 mA offer enough resources to run large stacks as ZigBee IP, ZigBee Smart Energy or ZigBee Light Link.

The small size of the modules and the new RF pad design offers more freedom for the design-in-process. You can connect custom circuit board antennas or U.FL/SMA connectors or implement own RF designs with e.g. antenna diversity. The power amplified variant 22M12 and 23M12 can deliver up to +20 dBm transmit power and offer already antenna diversity. This makes these modules ideal for range critical or mobile applications.

Versions

The solderable modules are available with RF pads or integrated chip ceramic antenna. For small sensors and actuators you can use the deRFmega128 line. For power critical applications with long RX listen times the deRFmega256 line might be the best choice. As quick start option, all modules are also available  pre-soldered onto adapter boards with the 23 pin connectors of the evaluation modules. Find all variants here.  

Software

All modules are delivered without firmware. They are supported by the IEEE 802.15.4 Mac, 6LoWPAN and ZigBee PRO software stacks. More information about the available stacks you will find in the software section.

Certification

Our modules are CE, ETSI and FCC compliant.  At the moment the version deRFmega128-22M00 and deRFmega256-23M12 are FCC certified. 

Compatibility

The respective variants of the deRFmega128 and deRFmega256 modules are fully interchangeable. Any existing software runs without changes but needs to be recompiled for the correct processor. The module variants on adapter boards are pin- and functional compatible to the evaluation modules and therefore usable with the development boards deRFnode or deRFbreakout board.
